The Apple Train – Sept/Oct 2009

Apple picking in the fall in Quebec is as much a ritual as our sugar shacks in the spring. Schools and day cares arrange apple picking outings as do families. But did you know that in Montreal, you don’t have to have a car if you want to go apple picking? It’s true. Check out the Pommes-en-Train, run by the AMT (transportation service that goes outside the Montreal area).

I debated as to whether this should fall under Montreal on the Cheap because it’s a bit on the more expensive side than I usually post, but it’s for a whole afternoon and it is an outing, so I thought I’d throw it in for those of you who would like to do this.

What: Take the train to an apple orchard in the lower Laurentian area. It’s a bring your own lunch/picnic event and for everyone 13 years and older, you get to pick (and keep!) a 5 pound bag of apples.

When: Every Saturday, starting September 5, ending October 10. Train leaves at noon and returns at 5 P.M.

Where: Central station is where you get the train. It’s located at 895 rue de La Gauchetière Ouest (west), downtown

Cost: (tax included) Children 5 and under are free, 6 to 12: 16:65, teens and adults: 29.45 and seniors: 25.45.
