Here are some spooky and maybe not-so-spooky events for the family this October:

The Great Pumpkin Ball Is Back!
Montréal, August 21, 2009 – Montréal’s Nature Museums invite spooks and goblins of all ages to celebrate Halloween at the Montréal Botanical Garden and Insectarium, from October 2 to November 1, 2009. There will be all kinds of indoor and outdoor activities starring the queens of the ball: pumpkins! The huge pumpkin-decorating contest, with over ten categories, is an opportunity for handy pumpkin and squash fans to show off their imagination and talents. And lots more, too: Esmeralda the witch, a play starring Pépo-citrouille, many members of the spider family and, just for younger visitors, the Little Monsters Courtyard, a play area full of surprisesforward to loads of fun and discoveries at this great Halloween fest!
PUMPKIN-DECORATING CONTEST
Feeling creative? Put your talents to the test with the Botanical Garden’s traditional pumpkin-decorating contest. Pumpkin and squash fans of all ages are invited to enter: all you need is boundless imagination and a love of these delightful vegetables. Pumpkins transformed into ghosts, vampires, scarecrows and more will be exhibited in the Main Exhibition Greenhouse. There are three main categories and lots of prizes to be won. ESMERALDA GOES GREEN
Esmeralda the friendly witch (she’s really not nasty at all!) is proud of her new country house. Accompanied by her cat, Abracadabra, and her broom, Gontran, she’ll be happy to let you in on a few environmentally friendly secrets – like her ingenious and practical rainwater recovery system. It’s almost like magic! Daily, in the Botanical Garden Main Exhibition Greenhouse, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
SQUASH SQUEEZE AND CUCURBITACEAE OLYMPICS
Little Monsters Courtyard – ages 4 to 8
Young visitors can have fun with our all new Squash Squeeze game, take part in the cucurbitaceae Olympics, or even compete in the pumpkin sack race. Daily, on the lawn near the lunch tent, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
LA FAMILLE DE PÉPO-CITROUILLE
A play for ages 4 to 8 (in French)
Pépo-citrouille sets out to meet some other members of his big plant family, the Cucurbitaceae. Lots of interesting encounters in store! Daily, in the auditorium. Showtimes available on www.museumsnature.ca
At the Insectarium … Spinning a Halloween web!

OUR NEIGHBOURS THE SPIDERS
We don’t always see them, but spiders make their homes all over the place: in the forest, in our gardens, in our homes. Here’s your chance to get to know and appreciate them! Daily – Length: 15 minutes
BUG BITES: SNEAKY SPIDERS
Eight legs and the ability to weave webs like some insect! Come listen to some interesting and sometimes surprising mini-presentations. Daily – Length: 10 minutes
ARACHNIDS AND COMPANY – NEW!
Spiders, scorpions and other creatures put on a show. They’ll reveal their real nature as they play the role of their lives – they’re sure to charm you!
Daily – Length: 20 minutes

Spooky Wagon Rides
La Ferme Quinn, 2495 Blvd. Perrot, Notre Dame de L’Ile Perrot. Bilingual. All ages. From dusk until 8:30 p.m. $10 (514) 453-1510. Kids can watch out for monsters as they catch a ride on a tractor that goes through corn fields.
