Two decades after the events of December 1989, the wounds left in the Eastern European memory by a history disrupted by totalitarian communist regimes continue to inspire film productions. Powerful works by new wave Eastern European film directors and masters of Romanian cinematography probe the legacy of the recent past while critically examining the present.

The Fabienne Colas Foundation, which created the Montreal International Black Film Festival (formerly the Montreal International Haitian Film Festival), Haiti on Fire and the Quebecois Film Festival in Haiti, is pleased and proud to announce the 7th Montreal International Black Film Festival, slated to run from September 21 to October 2, 2011. A dynamic, refreshing and audacious festival whose ambition is to encourage the development of the independent film industry and to promote more films on the reality of Black people from around the world.

From Friday, September 16, to Sunday, September 25, 2011, Quartiers Danses will present 38 choreographers, 50 performances and events in nine indoor and six outdoor venues spread out around the city in six different neighborhoods. Our program this year will also include a screening of films on dance by four Canadian directors about four choreographers who are taking part in the festival, as well as three photo exhibits on the previous edition of Quartiers Danses.

There will also be:

A showing at the NFB featuring height short films about dance on the work of Jane Mappin by Michael Slobodian, Françoise Sullivan by Mario Côté, Sarah Williams & Marie Brassard and Sonya Stefan, Yves Saint-Pierre & Sylvain Poirier / Bande Interdite.

The official Opening ceremony will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2011, at 12pm at Parc de l’Ukraine. The site will be open to visitors on Friday evening, September 09, 2011, at 7:30pm.

This brand-new festival is created in the image of its name. Like a cube, it has six faces. During the three days of PikniCubik, piknicers will be given an assortment of riches to choose from, as they’ll be free to explore one of the six following elements.

Auditory
PikniCubik is of course a Piknic Electronik event, so naturally music still has the central honour. Outside the programming detailed below, a third stage presented by STM will be added in the family zone to present artists whose musical offerings will be entirely dedicated to children.

Creative
The visual artists of the En Masse collective will be on hand for all three days, assembling a giant al fresco display inspired by the music and atmosphere of the event. Piknicers will also experience live silkscreen printing courtesy of Massiv’art who will be creating unique t-shirts.

Commemorative
A photo exhibit bringing together the best pictures taken over the course of the Piknic’s 9th edition will be put together and displayed on location.

Participative
Always true to its convictions, Piknic will extend its sustainable developments by organizing a “Clothing SWAP” and a “Vinyl and CD Trade”. A fun and eco-friendly way to reinvent your wardrobe in an hour while music fanatics trade records, or simply discover obscure musical pleasures.

Contemplative
After three full days of solid music, piknicers will be invited to take the load off their feet and spend their warm September evenings savouring the delicacies of summer with an open-air cinema.

Incentive
Along with granting access to the three days of the festival for a modest sum, the special PikniCubik pass will also offer rebates and freebies at a grab bag of partners across Montreal such as the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, Café Campus, Laïka, Bota Bota and L’Espace Aérodium.

Piknic Season Passes will be honoured for the festival. Without a pass, daily individual entry to the site will still be the regular price of $12 (taxes and service charges included)

We are very pleased to announce Montreal’s 2011 Polish festival, taking place in Raymond-Préfontaine Park on the weekend of the 26th – 28th of August.
