Forest Treks – Enjoy the Great Outdoors

January 7, 2011 by

I found this information over at About.com – Montrealer Evelyn Reid has a great channel about all things Montreal. I often find stuff I’ve posted already on her site and sometimes I find on her site things I didn’t know about, like these Forest Treks. So as not to steal her hard work, I’ll send you over there for more information.

A brief description:

Montreal’s Forest treks take you outside to through some of Montreal’s beautiful parks and trails. Very good prices for families, so you can enjoy it alone or with loved ones. There are often events after as well, so be sure to check the site to see if reservations are needed, etc. Have fun!

Cross Country Skiing in Montreal – Inexpensive Way to Enjoy Montreal in the Winter

January 1, 2011 by

Having fun in Montreal in the winter means many things for many people. You can hunker down inside and party the season away or you can embrace the winter weather and spend time outdoors. And, lucky for us in Montreal, we can do a lot of that.

Do you like to cross-country ski but can’t get out of the city? No matter – Montreal can offer you some great skiing for minimal cost (or no cost if you own your own skis).

Most of us know about Mount Royal for hiking and cross country skiing in Montreal, but there are several other parts of the city that may be more accessible to you. You can also take advantage of the large network to learn about parts of Montreal you’ve not yet ventured to.

While the information site is in French, even if you don’t read French, you can see the locations where skiing is available. “Pas de sentiers” means there are no ski trails available. The ones that do have trails have their addresses listed.

There are some rules, most of them common sense, but to ensure you know them, here they are in English:

  • Ski only in the marked areas and in the directions indicated
  • Obey the signs
  • Stay right if people are trying to pass
  • Stay in the designated ski trail in areas where there are both ski and pedestrian trails
  • Yield when skiers call out they are about to pass; call out when passing other skiers as well
  • Keep a reasonable distance between you and the skier in front
  • Do not go down a slope until the skier in front of you has done so
  • Stop to help skiers who need assistance
  • Obey instructions from the patrollers and report any problems that you notice along the trail
  • Dogs and other domestic animals are not permitted on the trail

Free Ski/Snowboard Tune Up Until Dec. 23/10

December 12, 2010 by

Esther sent me this information. You can get a free ski or snowboard “mise au point” at La Source Du Sport, which has several outlets in Quebec. We recommend you find the one you want to go to and then call them to be sure they will accept the coupon. The coupon says (in French) that you need to print it out and bring it to Ici Sport La Source which is the one located on Jean Talon, so the other stores may not be accepting it. Check just in case.

The coupon says to present it BEFORE asking for the service (too many people present coupons after they have something done) and the value is worth 28.00. Good until December 23, 2010.

Have fun!

Don’t Forget Beaver Lake for Outdoors Fun – free skating

December 7, 2010 by

Montreal’s Beaver Lake, in the heart of the city in Parc Mont Royal, is a great place for outdoors fun in both summer and winter. Right now, as winter descends upon us, why not plan for some snow and ice fun. The rink is actually a refrigerated rink, which makes the ice more reliable than some others.

The skating rink is open from December 4, 2010 to March 14, 2011

According to the Mount Royal website , the hours of operation are:

Refrigerated skating rink at Lac aux Castors

  • December 12, 2010 to March 7, 2011
    • Sunday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
    • Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Holiday hours

  • Closed as of 5 p.m. on December 24 and 31, 2010

If you don’t have skates, you can rent equipment on the spot for reasonable cost.

Passport to Prana – Yoga Card, 2010

March 16, 2010 by
Filed under Ongoing Deals, Physical exercise

I received an email about this program and it looks quite interesting if you’re interested in yoga and you would like to try out different classes.

You buy a card for 30.00 and this card entitles you to one free class at each of the yoga studios in the group. Of course, the purpose of the card is for you to find a class you like and hopefully you’ll stick with it – but it is a good and inexpensive way to try out which ones you may like. I think it would also be good for someone who is only staying in Montreal for a few weeks or a few months. There are 31 participating places.

Locations are all over the Montreal area and in Laval, with a few on the South Shore and the West Island.

Here’s the info:

The passport offers students a real taste of the yoga community and encourages them to find the studio and style that best suits them. Students are supported by our website which tracks their attendance and presents useful information about each studio including maps, and links to up-to-date schedules and announcements.
Click on Passport to Prana to see how it works. Please be sure to read all the details, including information on activating the card.
