Redpath Museum Sunday Discovery Workshops for Kids – Wintr 2011

Museums, discover and fun – that’s what Montreal’s Redpath Museum is all about. Their Sunday discovery workshops are popular so if you are interested in participating, it’s important to reserve your place early.

Although entry into the Redpath museum is free, there is a charge of 7.00 per child for three workshops. Parents or accompanying adults are free. Call 514 398 4092 for reservations and to pay.

January 9 – English: Mummies. Decipher the Secrets of Egyptian mummies. Same workshop in French on March 27

January 23 – English: Ninja and Samurai. Explore the legends of these eastern warriors. Make a special helmet or mask.

February 6 – English: Dinosaurs of Canada. Uncover the dinosaurs that roamed Canada 75 million years ago. Make a dinosaur fridge magnet. Same workshop in French on March 13.

February 20 – English: Black Holes and the Solar System. Uncover the secrets of the galaxy. Make a craft that is out of this world.

March 6 – English: Dragons and mythological animals. Learn about our mythical creatures and why they are important. Make a dragon ornament.

March 20 – English: Volcanoes. Learn all about volcanoes, volcanic bombs, and eruptions. Same workshop in French on January 16.

April 3 – English: Seahorses. Learn about these unusual fish and why they are protected. Make a seahorse bubble wand.

French workshops not already mentioned above:

Jan. 30: Les géants et les petits. Venez comparer les organismes les plus grands et les plus petits au monde. Savez vous quel est l’animal le plus petit?

Feb. 13: Les espèces en voie de disparition. Qui sont ces animaux? Que les menace? Comment peut-on les protéger?

Feb. 27: Les requins. Découvrez ces animaux extraordinaires.

McCord Museum: Toys – Until March 2011

The McCord Museum does charge an entry fee most days, but there are times when entry is free for everyone (see below). These days, why not take advantage and see their exhibition Toys.

According to their website:

Through a keyhole, we catch a glimpse of a world that’s larger than life – the world of childhood and the imagination. Just in time for the holiday season, the McCord Museum displays its impressive collection of toys. A fun, interactive exhibition designed for children 3 to 10, but that will also enchant the young at heart.

Free admission for children 12 and under.
Children must be accompanied by an adult at all time in the exhibition room.
Reservation is required for all groups of 10 children or more.

Interactive tours of the exhibition and creative workshops are available.

Free Museum Admission: Montreal Museum Day, May 30/10

Every year, the “Museums without Boundaries” event provides free shuttles between the various participating museums. This year celebrates the 24th year that this program is in existence.

It’s back! Free Montreal Museums Day on Sunday, May 30, 2010. Free activities run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

There are free shuttles that go between most museums:

Do you like organized trips? Our six bus routes providing free transportation from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. are just the thing for you. Or would you rather organize your own itinerary? Whether you’re happiest on foot or bicycle, or you prefer to drive or take public transit, or you’d like to cross the St. Lawrence on a river shuttle, we’ve got what you need.

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is presenting an exhibition on the great musician, Miles Davis.

According to the Museum’s website:

With this exhibition, the Museum pays tribute to Miles Davis (1926-1991), one of the twentieth century’s greatest musicians. The multimedia retrospective (musical excerpts, film and documentary clips, drawings by Miles Davis; paintings by Jean-Michel Basquiat and Mati Klarwein; photographs by Annie Leibovitz and Irving Penn; costumes, musical instruments and scores lent by the Davis family, etc.) recalls the highlights of his life and career, including his memorable concerts in Montreal.

An exhibit at the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art, Cubes, Blocks and Other Spaces, is coming to the end of its run. Don’t wait if you want to see it. The price is particularly right on Wednesday evenings: free.

Open Tuesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Admission:
Free admission every Wednesday evening from 5 to 9 p.m.

  • $10 adults?$8 seniors (aged 60 and over)?$6 students (aged 30 and under with student I.D.)
  • $20 family package (maximum 4 persons including at least 1 adult with adolescents aged 12 to 17).
  • Free admission for children under 12 and members of the Musée.

Leonard Cohen Artworks, Free, Feb 19 to 28, 2010

The Montreal Highlights Festival presents an opportunity for Montrealers and friends to see the artwork of performer Leanard Cohen.

The Galerie Lounge TD is honoured to present is honoured to present the sketches and drawings of the great poet, songwriter and singer Leonard Cohen, for the first time ever in Montreal. Leonard Cohen has filled sketchbooks since the outset of his career, tracing shapes and forms and giving life to a poet’s words.

Until 2007, the great artist had never exhibited his drawings. Self-portraits annotated in his own hand, nudes and female portraits, and everyday objects invite the viewer to share an intimate moment with this extraordinary Montreal creative force whose words, timeless melodies and deep, warm voice have seduced audiences the world over for forty years.

This exhibition of works selected from the Musée Collection takes a fresh look at the framework that surrounds our everyday life: the city, its buildings, its activities, as well as the way it is depicted in the media. This framework which structures our environment has undergone numerous transformations since the beginning of the twentieth century.

Intergenerational Sundays

A wonderful way for grandparents and grandchildren to spend some special time together:


Every Sunday, Pointe-à-Callière invites grandparents to visit the Museum along with their grandchildren. For the occasion, free admission is offered to grandparents (65 years and older, upon presentation of proper identification), as well as to grandchildren (under the age of 18). And at all times, on a grandparent’s or grandchild’s birthday, admission to the Museum is free for both when they come to the Museum together.

Grandparents and their grandchildren can spend some quality time together, enjoying the multimedia show above the archaeological remains and visiting the Where Montréal Was Born and Montréal Love Stories – The Cultural Connection exhibitions, as well as the current temporary exhibition.

The Pointe-a-Calliere museum always has fascinating presentations and this one is no exception:

Who is the real Santa Claus?

A delightful world tour of holiday traditions!

December is the time to meet Santa Clauses from around the world, accompanied by our interpreter-guides. During the month of December, young and old alike are invited to come meet St. Nicholas, St. Lucy, Befana and Santa Claus. While visiting the archaeological remains, children will meet four Christmas characters who will explain how the holidays are celebrated in their parts of the world. Come on a delightful world tour of holiday traditions! Meet them all and decide for yourself.

Plan for about 45 minutes to complete this tour accompanied by and interpreter-guide.
Places for each group are limited.
