“Mont Saint Bruno (30 minutes from Montreal) has a special on Sunday nights starting after 5 pm: 10$ for lift tickets and 17$ to rent snowboard or skis. It’s incredibly cheap & a pretty good mountain to go to with a great snowparc.”

Montreal Highlights Festival 2010

One look at the program will be enough to convince you that this year’s edition is especially zany, crazy and free-spirited, the perfectly magical kickoff for all other “Nuits Blanches” that follow, in cities the world over. This Saturday, February 27, High Lighters can discover the city by night, plunging into 180 activities—most of them free—spread indoors and outdoors over three quartiers and one pole (sector). Feel like dancing, clambering onstage, singing, swimming, laughing? Ready for stories, an artistically re-imagined Montreal underground and a night of endless surprises?

Join Montreal’s La fête des Neiges de Montréal and see what we can do with winter!

New Year’s Eve at the Old Port, Montreal, Free event

Looking for something to do on December 31, 2009? If you like fireworks and being outside, the Old Port is dishing up fireworks to celebrate New Year’s Eve.

According to the Old Port website:

This festive event is the perfect way to start the New Year with a bang with family and friends. The fireworks are launched from Jacques-Cartier Quay, in the Quays of the Old-Port, and last about 15 minutes.

Date: December 31, 2009

Time: Midnight (12 a.m.)

Location: Jacques-Cartier Quay

Approximate length of the fireworks: 10 to 15 minute.

Ok, it’s not quite cold enough for outdoor skating yet, due to our unusually mild November, but it is coming. And when it does, skating is a great way to get outside and have some fun at the same time. Here is the weekly schedule for the skating rink at the Old Port from Dec. 5, 2009 to March 7, 2010

Classical Mondays: 7 p.m.-9 p.m.
MMM Tuesdays (multicultural Montreal, music of the world): 7 p.m.-9 p.m.
Alternative Rock Wednesdays: 7 p.m.-9 p.m.
Rock n’ Roll Thursdays: 7 p.m.-10 p.m.
Retro Fridays (80s-90s): 7 p.m.-10 p.m.
Saturdays: D.J. on the ice

Telus Fire on Ice, Saturdays in December, 2009

Part of enjoying life in Montreal is adapting to the weather and still enjoying yourself. The Telus Fire on Ice series is a great way to do this.

According to their website:

From Saturday, December 5 at 8:00pm, and every Saturday of the month thereafter, the Telus Fire on Ice musical fireworks will project you into a universe of shapes and colors, created and put to music by internationally-recognized fireworks experts, known worldwide for their expertise and originality. This series of ‘pyro-musical’ shows not only kicks off the winter season, but puts you right at the heart of holiday magic! Only the best pyrotechnic firms in Quebec were selected to ignite the skies over the Quays:

Christmas Candlelight Walk and Fireworks, Dec. 5, 2009

Looking for a unique way to start off your Christmas season in Montreal? How about an outdoors gathering of candles and fun.

The Mont Royal quartier has developed this lovely family and festive tradition, walking among flickering candles to Lafontaine Park. Singing and choruses add to the fun.

Where and When:

The walk begins at Saturday, Dec. 5 at 6:30 pm at du Parc des Compagnons-de-Saint?Laurent (Mont?Royal/Cartier), arriving at 7:15 at the de la Roche entrance of the park.

The walk is followed by music and entertainment for the family. At 7:30, enjoy some fireworks that will light up the sky.

Cost: The walk is free but you can purchase a Christmas Candle.
