Auberge Le jardin d’Antoine, Affordable Montreal Hotel

I’m often asked if I know of any affordable or inexpensive places to stay in Montreal. I am usually hesitant to recommend any particular place unless I receive a good report from someone I know. After all, I could just as easily Google for a place but that doesn’t mean it’s a place I would like to recommend.
Anyway, I now have a place to recommend that is in the Latin Quarter – very close to fun stuff to do and centrally located. While it’s not “dirt cheap,” it’s definitely less expensive than many other Montreal hotel options. My friend tells me it was good value for the money. She did have one word of warning though – if you have a room facing the street, on Friday night, it can be quite loud.

Montreal’s Carifiesta Parade, July 9, 2011.
Enjoy the Caribbean sights and sounds on July 9, 2011, when Carifiesta takes over.
From the Carifiesta website:
On Saturday, July 9, 2011, for its 36th edition, the Carifiesta’s immensely colourful parade will take over the streets of the Montreal downtown area. More than 250,000 people are expected to attend this annual carnival which gathers people of all origins in the expression of the joy and light heartedness associated to the Caribbean people. For 6 hours, the participants and spectators will vibrate and dance to the rhythm of the Latin, West-Indian and afro-caribbean music. The parade will include floats decorated with the colors of the countries being represented, as well as traditional dances, exotic and picturesque costumes worn by the Carifiesta masqueraders.
So, where does it start? The parade takes off at noon from Guy and Rene-Levesque and heads west to Sanguinet.
Some Cheap & Free Activities In Montreal: Parc Jean-Drapeau
With tourist season upon us and many Montrealers looking for inexpensive and free activities in Montreal, we’ll be rounding up some of our city’s finest, well-known, and maybe lesser known activities that are free or low cost. This is just a few of them with more to come. And, if you have any to add, please feel free to mention them in the comments section and we’ll make a great list for all. Today, we’re starting with our man-made island and Parc Jean-Drapeau:
Île Sainte-Hélène et Notre-Dame – by Jean-Drapeau metro station
- Art tour. All over the island, you will find different types of art exhibits, all for free. You can find the list here.
- Cycling paths are open from April 15 to October 31, 2011 and cover the island. You can bring your bike on the metro, but be sure to check when you may and which metro cars you must use.
- Walking and running – why not train on the Gilles-Villeneuve Circuit?
- Like gardens? Check out the Floralies gardens, the legacy of the 1980 Floralies Internationales horticultural fair.
- The Biosphere (free admission): See exhibits like the Ecoological Solar House and Water Wonders. And don’t forget the GeoTour 67. It’s a GPS tour ($5 rental fee for the unit):
The Biosphère offers you an activity that is both unique and original: the interactive GeoTour 67 walking circuit, where visitors find their way around using a GPS (Global Positioning System) navigational device. What makes this educational activity unique is the fact that it involves the use of an innovative interpretive device that merges high technology with geolocalization. Complete with multimedia content, it offers an experience of interactive discovery that is unique in Canada.
- Swi mming! Don’t forget the aquatic complexes at Parc Jean Drapeau. On June 18th, admission is free, and the rest of the time, prices are very reasonable. Check out the admission prices here and for the beach here.
- The International Fireworks Festival. Every year, countries compete in the Montreal International Fireworks Festival and put on shows that surpass any bonfire fireworks we may try to put on ourselves. Every Saturday from June 25 to July 30th. You can either spend the day at Laronde (pricey) or find great places around the island, on the south shore and in Montreal to get a great view.
More to come!
