McDonald’s is once again offering free small premium roast coffee to its patrons, until November 6, 2011.

The offer is not restricted to breakfast hours, but available all day, one coffee per person per visit.

Want to eat well but on a budget? Here is a great recipe site that doesn’t make you feel you have to be a gourmet cook or have all sorts of exotic ingredients on hand.

SOS Cuisine has many tasty budget recipes and their budget recipes are based on the specials in your supermarket for each week. The editors for the site receive advance notice of what the sales and deals will be in the grocery stores and prepare the menus so they’ll match what you may be shopping for.

There are also other types of recipes, such as cooking for one, cooking for kids and local cooking. Check it out. It may be just what you’re looking for.

Join a special celebration of Montreal summer when CJAD celebrities and local sports celebrities create the perfect hamburger at m:brgr. It’s a “Grill & Give”, compliments of Bick’s pickles. For just $5 you’ll get a delicious burger, drink and recipe booklet. Café 92 celebrates 3 years on June 4, 2011

On Saturday, June 4, why not head on down to one of my favourite places, Café 92,on the corner of Montclair and Sherbrooke West, a couple of blocks west of Cavendish. The owners Maria and Claudia are hosting a day of celebration, which include a mariachi band and $1.00 soft ice cream cones for the day.

Montreal Ikea – 1/2 off ice cream during spring break 2011

An MOTC visitor, Mena, sent me the following information about the Montreal Ikea store:

“I am not sure if this warrants being on montreal on the cheap but Ikea has half price ice cream cones for spring break week. $0.50!!!”

Of course that fits here! Thanks Mena. I don’t have any more information than that though.

I just went to their website and saw that their famous meatball meal is down from 5.99 to 2.99 from 5 pm to closing.

It doesn’t matter if it’s McDonald’s way to get people away from the Tim Hortons Roll up the Rim to Win, but from Feb. 28 to March 6, 2011, they are giving away a small cup of coffee for free.

We can’t tell yet if it’s breakfast time or all day, so if anyone knows, please share!

Happening Gourmand – January 10-31, 2011

What could be a better experience than dining in Montreal? We have such a variety of restaurants that suit just about every palate and cater to various budgets. But eating in fine restaurants, particularly in areas like Old Montreal, may seem a bit too pricey for many people. If cost is holding you back, we have a tip for you! For the fourth year in a row, several restaurants have gotten together to make dining in Old Montreal an affordable outing. The result: Happening Gourmand, which was based on the popular New York Restaurant Week.

The 8 participating restaurants offer you a fixed price menu of 18, 23, or 27 dollars, depending on the restaurant. The price includes a choice of one of 2 entrées, 3 main meals, and 2 deserts.

Check the website for the restaurant menus and contact information. You should also check if you need reservations. As this event gains popularity, reservations are likely the best way to go to avoid disappointment.

Mommy’s Fish & Chips, now in NDG too

If you like good fish & chips and haven’t yet gone to Mommy’s (in Lachine), you may find the new NDG location in Monkland village more convenient.

The food is good (although I hear it was better several years ago) and the prices are decent:

Located at 3135, rue Notre-Dame corner 32e Ave, it’s an easy stop in the summer if you’re walking, cycling or blading along the waterfront. And the new location at 5976 Monkland looks like it may become just a popular.

Kiano Restaurant – Caribbean Food Downtown Montreal

We put out a call for inexpensive restaurants in Montreal, but they had to be good! Kiano Restaurant answered the call. I haven’t tried it out yet, but we did do a bit of research and found a Montreal Gazette review of the restaurant/cafeteria that rated it quite well:

The menu takes a little from Haiti, a little from Jamaica, a little from Trinidad and surrounding areas. Admittedly, most offerings can be found in heating trays, ready to be served. But actually, the pre-prepared stews on display looked fairly enticing, and plates were carefully put together.

We don’t know anyone personally who has eaten there, so if you have or do go now that you know about, please let us know what you thought.
