Empty Bowls – April 25, 2010

April 17, 2010 by MarijkeD

Every so often, we promote events that help improve the lives of Montrealers. While this event is neither expensive nor inexpensive, it’s a valuable one for Montrealers.

Last year, Empty Bowls/Bols du Parage, raised over $13,000 to help feed hungry Montrealers. Going hungry because of lack of money shouldn’t happen in a city like ours. Groups are trying to help but they need funds. That’s where Empty Bowls comes in.

According to their website:

Empty Bowls is a hunger-fighting fundraiser, bringing people together for a simple but nourishing meal of soup, bread and fruit.

Soup is served in a hand-made bowl donated by a Quebec potter, which is yours to keep. Again this year, the event is a collaboration between the Congregation Dorshei Emet and the Unitarian Church of Montreal.

They held their first of two events today, at the Unitarian Church in NDG. I attended and for 20.00, I chose a beautiful hand made, uniquely glazed bowl in which I was served a delicious and generous helping of soup. At the table was a beautiful fruit basket, from which I was encouraged to choose something, as well as a bread basket filled with many different types of bread.

Because I went alone, I was able to look around and watch the people around me. There were friends, families, and others, like me, who came alone. There was a trio playing lovely music and there is a raffle, as well as a soup cookbook for sale.

100% of the proceeds are given to:

  • Dépôt alimentaire NDG Food Depot
  • Dorshei Emet Hanukkah Food Basket Fund
  • Fondation Générations Foundation
  • Multi Caf
  • Santropol Roulant

Their second event will be held on Sunday, April 25, 2010 at Congregation Dorshei Emet, 18 Cleve Road, Hampstead, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

I might be attending the one next week again with a friend. Otherwise, for sure I’ll be back next year.
