If you like to visit museums but have trouble deciding which to visit and where to go, circle May 31, 2009 on your calendar. That’s the day for Montreal’s annual free museum day. Not only do you have access to 30 museums across the city for free, there are six bus routes to take you from museum to museum. Even better – the buses are free too.

Montreal on the cheap (with kids), John Symon

Montreal on the cheap (with kids) – Guest post by Montreal author, John Symon:
Exploring Montreal with Kids, – which lists some 500 ideas of possible destinations for places to take the family this weekend – contains many budget ideas. For instance, the last two pages of the guidebook list free destinations around the city. Apart from parks, toboggan hills, bicycle paths, concerts, etc, you can find the schedule for which museums are free and when. The Electrium in St Bruno is always free, for example, while the Redpath is free except for weekend workshops. Montreal’s Museum of Fine Arts is always free for those visiting the permanent collection and for the Esso family programs on Sundays. On top of that, there is Museum Day (May 31, 2009) when some 30 Montreal area museums are free.
By the way, most museums now have interactive displays and special programming for children. They have become great places to take kids in sharp contrast with the way some of them were a few short decades ago. My own kids often preferred visiting museums to the play lands at McDonalds!
Many other destinations are listed that will hardly break the bank. Did you know that one of Canada’s least expensive zoos is in Montreal? An adult admission at the Emile Berliner Museum (a Montreal-based rival of Thomas Edison) costs $3 and it’s only $2 for kids. Montreal is also apparently the only city in Canada where admission to indoor swimming pools is generally free (the Aquadome at $3 per adult is an exception) as is admission to outdoor pools on weekdays.
Reading this guide and/or associated website, you can learn about Acces Montreal cards (available for Montreal residents) that give discounts on entrance fees at many Montreal destinations. And there is a reasonable facsimile available for visitors from out of town…
Did you know that the STM (Montreal’s public transportation authority) allows up to five children under 12 years old to travel free with an accompanying adult on the buses and metro (subway) on weekends? You can also learn about how and where to print STM coupons for reductions on admission prices.
A French version of this guidebook, Découvrir Montréal avec les enfants, is also available and both versions retail for $19.95. For more information, enquire at your favourite book store or visit Montreal with Kids.
