Intergenerational Sundays

A wonderful way for grandparents and grandchildren to spend some special time together:

Every Sunday, Pointe-à-Callière invites grandparents to visit the Museum along with their grandchildren. For the occasion, free admission is offered to grandparents (65 years and older, upon presentation of proper identification), as well as to grandchildren (under the age of 18). And at all times, on a grandparent’s or grandchild’s birthday, admission to the Museum is free for both when they come to the Museum together.

Interesting Service: TaskHire.ca

October 30, 2010 by

I found an interesting service, fairly new to Montreal, but I think it could really go places because it’s a great idea. It saves money for the people who need tasks done and it earns money for the people who are doing the need tasks. Win-win, right?

It looks like they’re still building the site, but TaskHire.ca registeres Task Runners who apply for listed tasks, which include:

  • Moving a couch and air conditioner to a new apartment for a senior couple
  • Picking up groceries at Loblaws
  • Dog walking

and more

They also have a section where you can see what types of tasks may be requested, such as:

  • Delivering material swatches to a dress maker
  • Deliver lunch to the office
  • Bring your car for an oil change
  • Post my items on EBay

For more info, you can email them at info @ taskhire.ca

Fits, Starts & Matters of the Heart: Book

October 25, 2010 by

If you’re looking for a good curl-up-and-read book or a nice book gift for someone who loves to read short pieces of work and essays, I’m proud to announce the publication of  Fits, Starts & Matters of the Heart – 28 True Stories of Love, Loss and Everything in Between. One of the essays is by yours truly and the only other Canadian author in the book is fellow Montreal writer, Wendy Helfenbaum.

Amazon’s description:

For anyone who has fallen in love, been betrayed, lost a parent or let a child fly from the nest, Fits, Starts & Matters of the Heart will resonate with your heart. A woman recalls her decision to lose her virginity at 17 – and the emotional roller coaster that ensues when her parents discover a secret stash of prophylactics. A mother comes to terms with her adopted daughter’s quest to find her birth mom. A black Labrador wreaks havoc on one woman’s idyllic relationship with her boyfriend- until she, too, falls in love with the beautiful canine. A pregnant woman discovers her husband’s affair – and realizes that the baby she’s carrying is her ticket to rebirth. A daughter learns that the way into her father’s heart is through her hair. These are just a few of the essays in Fits, Starts & Matters of the Heart: 28 True Stories of Love, Loss & Everything in Between.

In this compelling collection, a group of writers, who connected through a professional community called Freelance Success, share the joy and angst at the root of all relationships. Through stories of family and friends, lovers and exes, even pets and rock stars, these writers demonstrate the enduring power of relationships to drive, haunt, empower, and enrich us.

Information on the individual essayists and the book itself will be updated on the new blog, Essays,:Fits, Starts and More.

Wendy and I are also both available to speak at groups (book clubs, etc) and for book events.

Student Via Rail Deals Ontario/Quebec

October 23, 2010 by

If you’re a full-time student and you travel regularly between places in Ontario and Quebec, Via Rail has a package called 6 Pak for Students

Buy a 6 PAK, and earn important savings.

With VIA Rail, your full-time student status already gets you an interesting discount on our adult regular fare in Economy class. But when you travel more often, the 6 pak for students allows you to save up to 50% on our adult regular fare with the purchase of 6 one-way trips (3 round trips) in Economy class between two pre-determined stations on the VIA network.

To take advantage of the student discount or to buy your 6 pak*, just show proof of age if you’re 17 or younger, or an ISIC** card if you’re 18 or older.

I read somewhere that the tickets are good for one year after purchase, but double check that to be sure as I can’t find that information again.

Passport to Prana – Yoga Card, 2010

March 16, 2010 by
Filed under Ongoing Deals, Physical exercise

I received an email about this program and it looks quite interesting if you’re interested in yoga and you would like to try out different classes.

You buy a card for 30.00 and this card entitles you to one free class at each of the yoga studios in the group. Of course, the purpose of the card is for you to find a class you like and hopefully you’ll stick with it – but it is a good and inexpensive way to try out which ones you may like. I think it would also be good for someone who is only staying in Montreal for a few weeks or a few months. There are 31 participating places.

Locations are all over the Montreal area and in Laval, with a few on the South Shore and the West Island.

Here’s the info:

The passport offers students a real taste of the yoga community and encourages them to find the studio and style that best suits them. Students are supported by our website which tracks their attendance and presents useful information about each studio including maps, and links to up-to-date schedules and announcements.
Click on Passport to Prana to see how it works. Please be sure to read all the details, including information on activating the card.
