Win a Copy of Fits, Starts & Matters of the Heart – until Dec. 15, 2010

In October, I had the pleasure of announcing the publication of a story anthology, Fits, Starts & Matters of the Heart: 28 True Stories of Love, Loss and Everything in Between.
Would you like to win a copy? If so, here’s your chance. MOTC is now on Facebook. Just visit us on Facebook and “like” us – and you’ll be automatically entered to have a chance to win.
If you are already a friend of MOTC on Facebook, simply leave a comment on the FB page sometime in the next two weeks and you’ll be entered as well.
Each person who “likes” the page or leaves a comment will be assigned a number in the order they participated. The numbers will be entered into an on-line randomizer, which will then select the winning number.
The contest ends at 11:59 PM on December 15, 2010, and the book shall be mailed to the winner shortly after. Just in time for the holidays.
Good luck!
Scene Card Winners, Nov. 15, 2010

Two weeks ago, I announced a contest that gave MOTC contributors an opportunity to win two Scene cards, each one loaded with adult entrance for one movie. These cards are to be kept for you to add points to save up for another free movie.
To enter, MOTC readers had to submit a usable idea for MOTC and a few did. The winners are….drum roll please…..
Tanya, for her tip about the Walk to Bethlehem
and
Andrea, who sent a few tips but whose winning one was for eyebrow threading.
Congratulations! Someone from the promotional company that deals with the Scene cards will be in contact with you shortly.
For those who didn’t win and those who didn’t know about the contest, there will be more. But please continue to send in your tips about inexpensive or free events in Montreal. We need eyes and ears everywhere!
Movie Give-Away! (Contest), Until November 14, 2010

Loyalty cards are everywhere, from Airmiles points to the coffee card from your local coffee shop. The idea behind the cards is you’re going to buy the product or service anyway, so you might as well shop at their place or sponsored place and then collect rewards for doing so.
The movie scene has a similar loyalty type card now called the SCENE card. The way it works is every time you purchase an adult-fee movie ticked at a participating Cineplex entertainment theatre or at Cineplex.com, you earn points that will eventually add up to free movies or other treats.
To make MOTC readers aware of the program, I’ve been offered two sets of cards that already are already loaded with one adult movie price ticket to give away to two MOTC visitors. Interested in winning? Here’s the deal:
Between now and 11:59 PM on November 14, 2010, anyone who leaves a comment on any one of the MOTC posts will be entered into the draw. If you send me (Marijke/Montreal On The Cheap) a usable tip to put on the site, you’ll get two entries. Each entry will receive a number according to when it came in or was posted on MOTC.
At the close of the contest, two numbers will be picked by a computer-generated randomizer. The winners will be contacted by the company to arrange for delivery of the prizes.
Rules:
1- Comments must be worthwhile. Entries like “enter me” or “I want to win” don’t count.
2- Tips for events must be verifiable.
3- You may enter more than once, but please use common sense as to how many times you enter.
That’s it. The contest is ON!

Hi all,
It has come to may attention that some other sites are using the term “Montreal on the Cheap” when promoting their pages. I wanted to let you know you that they are not associated with this site and are not part of the Cities on the Cheap network, something that is a very valuable asset.
Thanks for being MOTC visitors and this is THE place to be for inexpensive or free fun in Montreal!

I’ve posted about the store before, but I received this press release at the beginning of the week that I would like to pass on. I believe in the program and I hope others do to!
RESTORE RENOVATION CENTER: ELIMINATING WASTE, ONE PIECE AT A TIME
Montreal, October 18, 2010 – – The Québec Waste Reduction Week is a yearly reminder to reduce, reuse and recycle, whereas Habitat for Humanity Canada’s ReStore outlets offer Canadians a chance to act responsibly year-round in favor of the environment, by taking in new and nearly-new construction and renovation material, and selling it at a fraction of the retail price.
Habitat for Humanity ReStore’s triple-benefit formula – economical, ecological and altruistic – now covers the globe, with more than 750 ReStore outlets worldwide. Collectively, the 61 Habitat for Humanity ReStore centers in Canada reclaim millions of kilograms of material that would otherwise end up in landfills; just for 2009, this represented 15,000 tons of waste avoidance.
ReStore outlets take in for resale good quality, new or slightly used household accessories, stock balances, goods with minor imperfections or whose production run is terminated, returned items and even mis-coloured paint mixes.
All proceeds from ReStore’s Montreal outlet are turned over to Habitat for Humanity Montreal, to support its construction program to build safe, decent and affordable houses, in partnership with low-income families.
Montreal’s ReStore outlet also collects moneys to help Habitat for Humanity Haiti build housing in that distressed country. You can support this effort by donating your old cell phones; you can also buy fair-trade chocolate, and the proceeds will be given to our Haitian partner. Montreal’s ReStore center also accepts used batteries and participates in Recyc-Québec’s ICI on recycle! program. Our store is located at 4399 Notre-Dame Street, in St-Henri (Montréal).
About Habitat for Humanity Canada:
Habitat for Humanity Canada is a national, non-profit, faith-based organization working for a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. The mission of the organization is to mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting homeownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty. Habitat for Humanity Canada was founded in 1985, consists of over 35,000 volunteers and 72 affiliate organizations from coast to coast, and is a member of Habitat for Humanity International which spans 93 countries, has built over 300,000 homes, and is now building a new home every 10 minutes.

Admin Note to MOTC Readers
February 5, 2010 by MarijkeD
Filed under Entertainment, General, Special Announcements
Yesterday, February 4, 2010, an email went out with a long list of events and deals, many of which had expired. I want to apologize for both the length and the expired events.
MOTC was hacked a while ago, but this went undetected until very recently. We should have suspected something when the email updates stopped going out, but the hacking was not easily detected.
The site has since moved to a more secure server and is being monitored more closely. When the site was fixed, the updating emails resumed, but the first one, the one that went out last night, was – apparently – full of all the posts that had been put of over the last couple of months.
Thank you for being an MOTC visitor and reader.

Montreal on the Cheap Contest – January 2010

Ok Montrealers and those who are coming to Montreal for a visit – here’s something for you.
MOTC can’t do all the bargain hunting on its own and we need input from people who know Montreal inside out or those who just happened upon a great deal.
So, if you want to help us out here, you could win a 20.00 gift card from Chapters/Indigo (or Amazon if you prefer).
What we’re looking for:
Inexpensive ways to have fun in Montreal. Or free. They can be for children, families or adults only, but the information and topics have to be suitable for a site that anyone can visit.
Have a browse through the site to see what types of events have been posted already to get a good idea of what we promote.
Examples: Free activities, inexpensive movies, discounted events, well-priced restaurants.
Inexpensive doesn’t have to mean dirt cheap if it’s a significant discount. For example, if a show generally sells tickets for 75 dollars but is discounting some for a particular group of people to 40 dollars – that’s a significant savings.
We’ll post your ideas as they come up and at the end of the month, a random draw (by randomizer.org) will determine who wins the gift certificate.
You may enter as many times as you wish, but please don’t repeat your ideas. Also, “a walk in the park down the street” won’t really qualify unless there are details of what people can do at that particular park.
Ready?
Let’s get started and have some fun! You can leave your comments here or email us at Marijke/Montreal On The Cheap.

A Tank of Gas…

We’re starting a new feature here at Montreal on the Cheap called, A Tank of Gas…
This section will feature fun, inexpensive things Montrealers can do on one tank of gas. It could be an event in Ottawa, Ontario, the Eastern Townships or the Laurentians – or maybe just off the island in places like Ormstown or Beloeil.
If you have any suggestions for the new feature, please feel free to send them in. Everyone will be credited unless requested otherwise.
So, watch out for things to do with a tank of gas – or less.
